Office of Workforce Development

The Office of Workforce Development (WFD) is responsible for the coordination of department-wide education and training programs, processes and related tools. WFD coordinates efforts across the Department to maximize the use of limited resources to ensure that our workforce is competent and capable of carrying out the Department’s mission. Increased workforce effectiveness, efficiency and cost savings are achieved by:

  • Coordinating and maintaining DOH education and training programs, tools and other resources
  • Ensuring that training and education efforts are aligned to Public Health Core Competencies, the Ten Essential Public Health Services, and the Department’s Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinating a Workforce Development Advisory Council that guides and advises on the direction and priorities of the office.
  • Coordinating and managing the Distance Learning Network that includes the:
  • Learning Resource Library
  • Satellite Broadcasting system
  • Video Conferencing Network
  • Online Journals
  • Learning Management System
  • WFD Web pages
  • Managing and improving the Department’s Distance Learning Network. WFD utilizes a workgroup of representatives from across the Department to assist in system maintenance, upgrades and improvements.
  • Coordinating, maintaining or assisting with processes and policies that affect the required education and training of Department staff.
  • Coordinating and managing Leadership training for department staff, with a focus on basic and advanced Leadership training opportunities for supervisors and managers.
  • Identifying and reducing duplication of efforts through:
  • Collaboration with other agencies and organizations to expand education and training opportunities for DOH staff. This is achieved through participation in an interagency Training Directors quarterly meeting and other venues (for example, American Society for Training and Development, National Association of City and County Health Officials, Association of State and Territorial Health Officials).
  • Establishing and maintaining a list of DOH staff involved with training coordination, development and delivery. WFD hosts regular conference calls to allow for ongoing communication of model practices, needs and available resources across the Department.
