Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program
When a child or teen, under the age of 19 years, has an accident that causes a traumatic brain or spinal cord injury, the Children's Medical Services (CMS) Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program can help. After information about the child or teen is called in to the Florida Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program (BSCIP) Central Registry, 1-800-342-0778, a CMS brain and spinal cord injury nurse care coordinator will arrange to talk to the family and provide them information, help plan services, and talk about other resources to help the child or teen. The CMS nurse care coordinator is trained to help the child or teen, and their family, understand the diagnosis and treatment plan. The program's goal is to return the child or teen home to resume their regular activities in school and in their community.
The services provided may include:
- Printed materials that explain the traumatic brain or spinal cord injury
- On-going nurse care coordination from the BSCIP, for up to two years, to help with needed medical services or therapy, assistive technology, home modifications, or other referrals
- Community resources to help each child or teen and family with additional or long-term needs
