Module 1: Lesson 2: Periodic Review and Monitoring of the IFSP

Periodic Review and Monitoring of the IFSP

This step of the IFSP process occurs during implementation, as the team monitors child progress toward identified outcomes and periodically reviews all of the components of the IFSP as required in the IDEA, Part C Regulations, 34 CFR, Section 303.342. The team members communicate and meet with one another and the family on a regular basis to review the effectiveness of strategies and progress toward outcomes. Functional outcomes will be revised or new functional outcomes developed throughout the child's participation in the program. This on-going assessment results in a fluid IFSP process and the six-month review becomes part of this ongoing communication and documentation.

The same individuals, to the extent possible, that developed the initial IFSP, conducts the following activities for periodic review and monitoring of the IFSP and to meet Early Steps requirements:

  • review ongoing assessment information
  • solicit family perspective on progress toward outcomes and identification of new concerns/outcomes
  • change, modify, or develop outcomes and strategies, as appropriate
  • identify a new primary service provider, if appropriate.
  • maintain the same team composition (unless needs/concerns change or by family request)
