Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers

Children's Medical Services (CMS) believes that promoting the health and wellness of Florida's mothers-to-be and their newborn children will lead to a healthier future for our state. Through our Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers (RPICC), we work to improve the outcome of pregnancy and the quality of life from birth.

The RPICC centers provide obstetrical services to women who have a high-risk pregnancy and care for newborns with special health needs, such as critical illness or low birth weight. CMS Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Centers aim to:

  • Reduce the risk of serious illnesses for pregnant women and newborns.
  • Provide the best medical care to women with high-risk pregnancies and sick and preterm newborns.

Each year, CMS contracts with qualified hospitals and physicians to provide RPICC services to medically and financially eligible patients. These services are provided around the state in 11 RPICC hospitals and 8 Obstetrical Satellite Clinics.

RPICC services include high-quality medical care by a medical team of nurses, a doctor specializing in high-risk obstetrical care, a genetic counselor, an ultrasound technician, education, nutritional assessment, and consultation during pregnancy.

Eligibility Criteria

Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center services are available to all patients requiring these services. The only valid grounds for refusal to admit a patient are the lack of functional bed space or lack of transportation. Ability to pay for services is not a consideration for admission of patients in need of obstetrical or neonatal intensive care services. Medicaid, medical insurance and family resources cover the cost of care for patients treated at the centers. Patients whose care is provided by the RPICC Program must meet certain medical and financial eligibility criteria.
