Nearly 49 million people in America face hunger. That is 1 in 6 ofthe U.S. population-including more than 1 in 5 children. In Volusia and Flagler Counties many ofour neighbors are struggling to feed their families and you can help by accepting the Hunger Call to Action: Donate $1 each day for a week Sept. 9-15 = $7 to feed a family of 4 for 7-10 meals. With all of us doing our share we can help to make sure the families in our neighborhoods do not go hungry. GIVE $1 A DAY FOR A WEEK - To Feed a Neighbors Family WHO, WHAT, WHERE? The Community Foundation of East Central Florida and a coalition of community leaders invites individuals, civic groups, students, faith organizations and local corporations to participate in our "Feed Our Neighbors Week-Challenge for Hunger". We want the whole community to be involved for one week to help raise money for our local agencies providing food. Money raised in each county will be granted out to nonprofits working in that county, staying local. Groups can participate in our"Hunger Challenge': We invite civic organizations, students, corporations and faith groups to raise the most money for their category. Those who raise the most money will receive a "Heroes for Hunger Award': The corporation raising the most money for food duri ng the week of September 9-15th will receive recognition as our "Corporate Heroes for Hunger'. SEPTEMBER 9-15TH Participate at the level you like: Write a check to feed one or more families: Write a check to feed one or more families: At $7 a family you can help one or more neighbors. Money will be distributed throughout the county so families near you will get the help they need. Write check to: CFECF P.O. The decision was made to begin a Food Initiative, bring­ing together first the major leaders in Flagler and Volusia Counties to plan a Food Summit and tojoin together on an effort to raise money together for food. Our goal is to educate residents of Flagler, Putnam and Volusia Counties of the great need for food in our community and to challenge our community to raise money for the "Feed Our Neighbor Fund" to increase resources for those providing food. All donations will stay within the county from which it came and be distributed to local food ministries. Donations collected will go into the "Feed Our Neighbor Fund" held at the Community Foundation of East Central Florida, where 75% of money will be distributed out to local agencies this year, and 25% will go to build an endowment that will fund food ministries into the future. 100% ofthe donations goes to help provide food. Food4Kids Spirit Elementary was created this year in order to provide hungry children with food each weekend during the school year. How does it work? Every Friday children who participate in the program take home a backpack on wheels with food for weekend meals for all of the children in that family. Every Monday they return their backpack for the next week. At this time, the program is made possible by contnbutions from individuals.
