This West Nile Virus Training has been accepted by Volusia County Elementary School System and conforms to the State of Florida Science and Health Sunshine State Standards for Grades PreK - 5. The training is distributed to all schools in Volusia County, Florida and is now part of their curriculum. The Volusia County Health Department located in Deland, Florida developed this interactive multimedia training program to teach elementary school-aged children and their parents mosquito prevention techniques for West Nile Virus. It reviews good prevention practices such as removal of breeding habitat and community-wide control measures; and personal protective measures including use of appropriate clothing, screening, and repellents. It also reviews the public health problems associated with mosquitos. The CD ROM has games the children can play while teaching them about mosquitos. Children can take a checklist page home and go around their homes with their parents and mark off places that mosquitos hide and get rid of these places. Teachers can use the guide to follow the CD ROM and both the CD ROM and the guide have resources for additional information. Objectives of the program include: the stages of the mosquito life cycle, identification of mosquito breeding places and how to attempt to eliminate them, effective protection techniques, and how to protect their family and pets. This interactive multimedia training program was produced in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia. Technical content review and support was received from the Environmental Health Services Branch of the National Center for Environmental Health . The CD-ROM also provides CDC videos and posters on West Nile Virus. To order this CD, please use the order form located at the top of this page. |
