Tuberculosis Control Program
Welcome to the Volusia County Health Department Tuberculosis
Control ProgramThe mission of the Bureau of Tuberculosis and Refugee Health is to eliminate tuberculosis as a public health threat in Florida; and ensure appropriate public health screenings of all newly arriving refugees.
Our primary responsibility is Tuberculosis control and prevention as listed in Chapter 392 of the Florida Statutes. Our office consists of a group of highly qualified health personnel trained to conduct a community based tuberculosis control program.
The Tuberculosis Control staff members are engaged in a wide array of activities including:
- Clinical services
- Field services (outreach)
- Surveillance
- Administrative Support
HOW TO REPORT A CASE OF TB
Under the following circumstances, you should make a report to the TB Manager:
- Laboratory confirmation of TB disease
- TB disease is suspected based on clinical or radiological examination of the patient
- A client is started on two or more anti-TB medications
A report of TB may be made either by telephone to (386) 274-0654 or by fax to (386) 274-0658. On receiving a report, the program manager will contact the reporting physician or facility to obtain further information regarding the suspected case. After cases are reported to the State Health Office, they are forwarded to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Field services
Field services are responsible for all Outreach activities aimed at screening and identifying persons exposed to TB and for the administration of Directly Observed Therapy (DOT).
Surveillance services
Public health surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data about a health-related event for use in public health action to reduce morbidity and mortality and to improve health. It involves activities such as Detection (a circumstance or event that identifies a presumptive case-patient); Reporting (flow of data, information, messages); Confirmation (use of epidemiological and laboratory test information to verify the status of registered case-patients); Analysis (examination and interpretation of surveillance data).
Administrative support services
Administrative support services supervise the total program for optimal functionality.
