Friday, September 28th, 2012 is World Rabies Day which is a global health
observance that raises awareness about rabies and enhanced prevention and
control efforts.

The number of U.S. whooping cough cases has risen to around 18,000 in an outbreak that is on track to become the most severe in over a half century and could in part stem from possible waning vaccine protection, according to health officials. The Volusia County Health Department is monitoring a slight increase in reported cases of pertussis and has sent a health alert letter to the medical community to raise awareness. The sixth annual UNIVISION Community Health Fair was held at the Volusia County
Fairgrounds. There were a number of speakers, vendors, activities and good food
for all to enjoy. This year’s health fair was even more special because of a
visit by our state Surgeon General Dr. John Armstrong who not only delivered an
important health message but also took time to meet with residents, community
partners and health department staff.

Dozens of teens representing Students Working Against Tobacco or SWAT came
together to recognize the Daytona International Speedway for its bold move to
make the speedway’s grandstands smoke-free. Along with NASCAR driver Jeffery
Earnhardt and Volusia County Health Department Director Dr. Bonnie Sorensen, the
students of SWAT made sure their message was clear.
