Prescription drug abuse is a major problem in our society. The Substance Abuse Task Force for Volusia and Flagler Counties hosted a news conference recently to announce the launch of a new, community-based initiative designed to help combat the prescription drug epidemic. Stefany Strong has details in this segment of Community Health Matters. |

The Volusia County Health Department reminds you to avoid swimming in ponds, lakes, and rivers when the water is warm because there is an increased risk of amoeba. An amoeba infection could develop when these parasites enter the human body through the nose, making their way to the brain.

what many Floridians do not realize is that each one of those babies
receives special testing within their first 48 hours of life called

community members, the Volusia Flagler Family YMCA is partnering with
the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Pool Safely campaign.

collecting samples from private drinking water wells in the Deland
Country Club Estates area - after a pesticide was detected in the water.

In Volusia County 10 percent of middle school students and 9
percent of high school students were obese compared to 11 percent statewide
according to 2009 statistics. |

You may have noticed the strong smell of smoke--- or even
spotted it as Volusia County firefighters continue to battle multiple
wildfires burning throughout the area. |
It has been estimated that 7,000–8,000 people per year
receive venomous snakebites in the United States, and about 5 of those
people die. The number of deaths would be much higher if people did not
seek medical care. If you are bitten by a venomous snake- you’ll need
the anti-venom to save your life. |

Public Information Officer Stefany Strong reminds us that pool safety is everyone’s responsibility. It only takes a second for a small child to wander unsupervised outside- and before you know it- into the family pool.

The Volusia County Health Department and Volusia County Schools are
partnering to bring oral health care to local second graders. The school
based dental sealant program is possible because of a grant from the
Florida Department of Health. |

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation collaborated with the University
of Wisconsin Population Health Institute to develop and release County
Health Rankings for each state’s counties. These rankings provide
snapshots of community health for over 3,000 counties throughout the
country. In every state, people will be comparing how counties rank on
their health outcomes and health factors, based on a wide variety of
measures from mortality and quality of life to high school graduation
rates, unemployment rates, obesity rates, and air quality. |
The Community Used Sharps Disposal Program is provided as a public service
to protect public health and provide a safe environment for citizens of
Volusia and Flagler Counties.
