Florida Newborn Screening Program

PUBLIC NOTICES

Unsatisfactory Specimens

Each hospital, clinic, or physician's office should look at the files below for the number of specimens that need a newborn screening repeat. If a specimen sent to the lab was determined to be unsatisfactory, the submitting entity was notified that a repeat specimen was necessary.

Do not assume that the baby's primary care physician will know that the initial specimen was unsatisfactory if the specimen was submitted by the hospital. Unfortunately not all primary care physicians are checking to see the baby's screening results. It is ultimately the responsibility of the submitting entity (the hospital) to obtain the repeat specimen.

Babies should be screened at 24 hours of age and after the baby has been on protein for 24 hours.
