About Us

The Florida Department of Health is responsible for coordinating Florida's public health and healthcare system preparedness and response to disasters of all types. The preparedness effort focuses on developing critical capabilities necessary for an effective disaster response. The capabilities and associated strategies are outlined in the 2012-2014 Public Health and Healthcare Preparedness Strategic Plan . The Department serves as the lead agency for coordinating the state's public health and medical response to disasters. As a member of the State Emergency Response Team, our Emergency Coordinating Officer leads the response outlined in the State Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP), Emergency Support Function 8 - Public Health and Medical (ESF8).

Preparedness and response activities are funded in part by cooperative grant agreements with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The Bureau oversees the implementation of these agreements and provides grant management and funding administration.
