Human Trafficking Awareness Broadcast

Note: As of July 1, 2012, the Office of Injury Prevention became the Injury Prevention Program. Documents and activities finalized prior to this date will retain "Office of Injury Prevention".

Broadcast Overview

On January 6, 2011, the Florida Department of Health, Office of Injury Prevention (now the Injury Prevention Program) and Sexual Violence Prevention Program sponsored an educational program to provide medical professionals with a general overview of human trafficking. This program aired during National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. The program was a live satellite broadcast and a webcast.

During this broadcast and webinar participants learned:

  • The magnitude of the problem
  • The types of human trafficking and the difference between human trafficking
    and human smuggling
  • About Federal and State laws regarding human trafficking
  • About Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking and how to recognize its victims
  • About Federal, State and Local resources for referral and treatment

Topics specific to medical professionals included:

  • The prevalence of human trafficking victims in a health care practice
  • How human trafficking presents itself in a health care setting
  • How to screen for trafficking victims
  • Mandatory reporting obligations, including issues regarding privacy
  • Key health indicators related to human trafficking victims

Continuing Medical Education Information

Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits were provided for live broadcast participants through the Florida Medical Association. The Florida Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. At this time CMEs are not offered for individuals viewing the recorded broadcast.
