Statewide Senior Falls Prevention Coalition

About the Coalition

The Florida Injury Prevention Advisory Council (FIPAC) oversees the development and implementation of the Florida Injury Prevention Strategic Plan. The strategic plan has five goals to reduce the rate of injury within the state. Goal three of the five seeks to prevent senior falls and the rate of injury associated with such. The members of goal team three created a steering committee in 2009 which established the Statewide Senior Falls Prevention Coalition, with the support of the National Falls Free Coalition.

The members of the Statewide Senior Falls Prevention Coalition include representatives from key state agencies, the medical community, violence and injury prevention advocacy groups and nonprofit agencies, university systems, research facilities, county health departments, laypersons, law enforcement, and health educators. Its membership is an excellent representation of a public/private partnership and exemplifies a foundation for sustainable infrastructure building.

The Statewide Senior Falls Prevention Coalition helps to disseminate information about senior fall prevention awareness and evidence-based preventative measures throughout Florida. A Senior Falls Prevention Plan in is in development to aid in the guidance of future preventative actions. In addition, the Senior Falls Prevention Coalition works with local coalitions to help build a sustainable infrastructure through the identification and securing of key resources.

There are currently nine local coalitions throughout the state. Another six local coalitions are planned and in the development stages.
