Upcoming Training OpportunitiesTo view future training opportunities, please see the Calendar of Events. Injury Prevention 101In March 2004, the Office of Injury Prevention (now the Injury Prevention Program) was awarded a $12,000 one year mini-grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to increase injury prevention awareness among emergency medical services (EMS) personnel. An eight-hour injury prevention course was created based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Public Information, Education and Relations (PIER) for Emergency Medical Services Curriculum-Injury Prevention Modules. A panel of 25 emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics was established to develop the course. The panel met in Jacksonville on May 26–27, 2004 and developed a “PIER” for EMS course for statewide implementation. The course was offered to over 100 individuals (mostly EMS personnel) between July 2004 and February 2005. Several of the non-EMS employees who took the course were members of the Florida Injury Prevention Advisory Council (FIPAC.) FIPAC serves in an advisory capacity to the Office of Injury Prevention. After completing the course, several FIPAC members suggested, that with some changes, the PIER course could be used to educate the broader injury prevention workforce. The Injury Prevention 101 course was developed from the foundation of the previous PIER course, by FIPAC faculty, in conjunction with the Office of Injury Prevention. The inaugural course was taught on May 16, 2006, the second course was held on May 15, 2007 and the third course was held on May 20, 2008. The first three courses were held in Tampa, Florida. The 2009 Injury Prevention 101 course was held on May 12, 2009 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 2010 Injury Prevention 101 course was held on April 27, 2010, as a live satellite broadcast and web cast. Over 590 individuals participated in the 2010 course, including individuals from Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey and Oklahoma. To date, approximately 940 people from FIPAC, EMS, fire rescue, universities, county health departments, hospitals, injury survivors, nurses, and physicians have been trained in injury prevention basics as the result of this initiative.
