Senior Falls Prevention

Note: As of July 1, 2012, the Office of Injury Prevention became the Injury Prevention Program. Documents and activities finalized prior to this date will retain "Office of Injury Prevention".

Did You Know? For every senior fall prevented the following costs can be saved; the median admission charge for non-fatal fall injury hospitalizations was $39,782; total charges exceeded $2 billion. The median length of stay was four days. Senior Falls Data

Unintentional falls are the leading cause of injury death among Florida residents ages 65 years and older and the fourth leading cause of injury death overall. In addition, falls are the leading cause of non-fatal injury-related hospital admissions in Florida.

In 2009, 1,722 residents were fatally injured in a fall and another 58,350 were hospitalized for non-fatal injuries. Nearly three-quarters of these injuries were among residents ages 65 years and older.

How to Create a Local Senior Falls Prevention Coalition
