HIV Prevalence Rates Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in the Southern United States: Population-Based Estimates by Race/Ethnicity

This report analyzes estimated HIV/AIDS prevalence rates, by state and race/ethnicity, in the 17 states that comprise the South. It quantifies and compares the force of impact of HIV on MSM across the racial/ethnic spectrum, within and among the states. Disparities are dramatic, comparing MSM with all other males. Intra-state epidemics are also characterized by disproportionate impact of HIV on minority MSM. We examine disparities in terms of underlying factors that increase risk. There are implications and applications for primary and secondary prevention, community mobilization and advocacy.

The Continuing Crisis of HIV/AIDS Among Florida’s Men Who Have Sex With Men.
Throughout the epidemic, HIV/AIDS has been a crisis for communities of men who have sex with men (MSM). From the mid 1980’s into the early 1990’s, a large number of MSM diligently adopted risk reduction measures in the face of an incurable and unmanageable disease. The current intensity of the epidemic among MSM, coupled with increased HIV/AIDS complacency and sexual risk behavior calls for renewed emphasis on prevention efforts.
