Preliminary Research on SARS Treatment
The medical community recognizes
there is currently no effective treatment for SARS; however, an article
recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association provides
promising research that may be of interest to medical providers.
The findings in the study suggest further investigation may be warranted
to determine the role of interferon alfacon-1 in the treatment of SARS. In an
uncontrolled study of patients with SARS, the use of interferon alfacon-1 plus
corticosteroids was associated with reduced disease-associated impaired oxygen
saturation, rapid resolution of radiographic lung abnormalities, and lower
levels of creatine kinase.
