The RHP offers,
subject to the availability of funding, interpreter trainings
and in-service training for refugee service providers. These
trainings are intended to make refugee health staff and their
collaborative partners better equipped to serve the refugee
population. These trainings and related materials are discussed
in greater detail below. |

Interpreter Trainings
The RHP
contracts with Language Line Services to provide Basic and
Advanced Interpreter Trainings. These trainings aim to increase
a bilingual staff member’s ability to provide proper and ethical
interpretation services to their clientele. Trainings, when
available, are three full days and are open to bilingual staff
providing interpretation services to foreign-born populations.
Attendees need to be fluent in English and the target language.

Basic Interpreter Training:

Theories and historical
foundations of the profession of interpretation and
translation
The interpreter’s role,
responsibilities, and professional ethics
Dynamics of cross-cultural
interaction
State and federal legislation
related to interpretation
Cultural competency
How to deal with programmatic and
ethical dilemmas
How to apply ethics and professional
rules to interpreting situations
How to facilitate communication with
the service provider without becoming a barrier to the
client-provider relationship
Develop familiarity with medical
provider settings and provider-specific vocabulary
Develop skills in sight translation

Advanced Interpreter Training & Assessment:
Assess the participant’s ability to
understand the source language
Assess the participant’s ability to
express him/herself clearly, correctly, and fluently in the
target language
Ensure the participant can render
the meaning of the target language without any distortions,
additions, or omissions
Ensure the participant can transfer
a message from the source language to the target language with
the appropriate style and culture and without undue influence of
the source language
Assess the
participant’s ability to provide simultaneous and consecutive
interpretation, and the ability to choose the appropriate mode
of interpretation in any given setting

In-Service Training Materials for County
Health Departments (CHD's)
Cross-training
and information sharing is an important and beneficial practice
in any organization. Many individuals in the same organization
or field of service can go years without fully understanding the
services provided by their brother and sister programs. As
Refugee Health Programs are often small and share space and
clinic time with other CHD programs, it is extremely important
that staff within CHD and providers in the community are aware
of the program and the services offered to the refugee
population. The tools below are intended to assist Refugee
Health Programs with developing an In-Service Training for staff
within their CHD, as well as providers in their community.
