Florida Birth Defects Registry
As in other areas of the country, birth defects are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Florida's children and contribute substantially to long-term disability. The possible association between environmental contaminants and human health problems is an important concern throughout Florida. To answer this and other important questions, and to develop prevention strategies, Florida needed a statewide system of identifying birth defects.
With this in mind, the 1997 Florida Legislature passed legislation and appropriated funds to establish a birth defects registry. Following this legislative mandate, the Florida Department of Health created the
Florida Birth Defects Registry (FBDR) to be managed by the Division of
Disease Controll and Health Protection, Bureau of Epidemiology partnership
with a consortium of universities as a statewide population-based birth
defects surveillance system.
