 ESCAMBIA COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT
August PACE EH Project Update

1. Project Summary

We are continually making progress through maintaining contact with our elected officials, utilities, community redevelopment, and non-profits. Our first meeting on August 21st was a success! We have a game plan, and have already selected issues that the community wants addressed. The issues in order of importance are: Overflowing septic tanks, standing water, no sidewalks, poor lighting, overgrown lots, depreciation of property, and stray dogs. We have set the second meeting date at September 25th, and on September 9th, we will have the youth group with the NAACP assisting to distribute a pre-pace survey in the neighborhood, along with a flier for the next meeting, and petition for public sewer request. We will be going door to door, so that we can try and develop a trusting relationship with the community and get real time data. We may be adding more issues as we talk to more people. So far, the community has been responsive to this project and the stakeholders seem to be ready to help in any way that they can.

3. Outstanding Issues/Concerns

One of my concerns is in reaching all neighborhood residents. At our first meeting we had 21 attendees; however, over half of those in the room were governmental officials, public figureheads, and non-profits and business representatives. I only had about 6 folks from the neighborhood. I want to have more participation from the residents and business owners and hope that our work on September 9th will improve upon that. Kupfrian Park is located within the city and county, so I have to communicate equally with both. I am concerned that the relationship between city and county government may be complex at best, so this will be a challenge in trying to get participation. However, this will not slow us down. We will keep on trucking!
