Update
On February 2nd, the World Changers organization met
in West Wabasso to visit homes that are to be candidates for their
program. Over 300 people have registered so far to take part in this
event, which entails making minor repairs to the exterior of houses
in West Wabasso and I have selected 25 homes that will benefit from
their services. A lot of time was spent coordinating World Changers
details with the planning department and officials from the World
Changers organization, such as the construction engineer. The
candidates are very pleased, as is the neighborhood that help is on
the way. Many of the selected individuals have still not made
repairs to their homes that were damaged from Hurricane Jeanne and
Francis.
The West Wabasso Civic League held a community meeting on February
7th. Approximately 35 people attended and it was a very productive,
civil, and joyous meeting due to the fact that the streetlights have
all been installed and the number one issue (streetlights) that we
have been working so arduously to address has been solved! I was
pleased to turn the reigns back over to the West Wabasso Civic
League, and also hopeful that they would step up to the plate and
become more active in becoming a community presence. They conducted
a successful community meeting and informed the community of the
status of our ongoing projects.
On February 28th, I called a steering committee meeting at the
request of community leaders. They desired to continue having a
steering committee that would meet prior to community meetings. In
January I was very concerned that no individual had stepped forward
to assume the role and function that I had occupied in West Wabasso
to further the progress we had together accomplished over the past
year. Since then, I learned that it need not be a specific
individual, but a group of individuals - the steering committee!
They have assumed the leadership role and are able to literally
steer the community in the direction of progress. We all work
together splendidly and they are eager to continue the success we
have thus far accomplished.
