Subject:      November 2006 Wabasso PACE EH Grant Update

1. Project Summary

?Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don?t give up.?- Anne Lamott

Someone should put this quote in the PACE EH Guidebook as I?ve found that if you patiently and devotedly attend community meetings and try to do the right thing, listen to people, and don?t give up on them that success will surely result in some form. This month consisted of a lot of hope manifesting into realities, finally. The water project is nearing its completion. Homes were pressure tested and plumbing repaired as the grant specified and pending the clearance from DEP connections will be made by Christmas. The long battle to end resident?s only supply of water, which is brown, is over. The infrastructure that the community identified two and a half years ago in their PACE EH survey has materialized physically and they are enjoying the sidewalks, the walking trail in the park, and the streetlights which so many say make them feel much safer.

I made an effort to pull back my reigns on being omnipresent in Wabasso this month as it is I anticipate all action plans will have been carried out by next month and we can end our project. I was also away for two weeks of the month and involved with a few presentations, which warranted time and attention. While I intend to stay involved in this community, it will not be on the scale that I have employed myself with the PACE EH project. In fact, the community now feels empowered as they realize many of their goals have been accomplished and certainly know where to go to address future issues that may arise. In any event, I will attend monthly meetings and assist as I am able.

2. Work Plan and Process Update

PACE-EH Tasks Action Outcome Target Date
Task 13: Evaluate Progress and Plan for the Future Following through on executing our action plans to completion. 90% complete December 2006
Linking built environment to health through the natural progression accomplished thus far in the PACE process Ongoing Permanent

3. Outstanding Issues/Concerns

I missed my first community meeting in the entire three years of being involved in Wabasso due to my attendance at EH Strike Team Training. The community meeting went well and the leaders in the community led the meeting successfully.

I also provided PACE EH training in Palm Beach County on Nov. 21st. I asked Detective Teddy Floyd to aid me in the training due to the fact that Palm Beach County Sheriff Dept. would be attending. My thought was that we could tell them how PACE EH solidified the relationship between the Indian River County Health Dept. and the Indian River County Sheriff?s Dept. in hopes that they would get their PACE EH project off to a great start. The training was successful and we seemed to provide useful information to attendees who all had lots of good questions regarding the PACE EH process.
