Emergency Management of Radiation Accident Victims Training
This training was provided by staff from the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS), Oak Ridge, TN,
and sponsored by the Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Radiation Control, Emergency Response Program. The training was
intended for medical personnel who need to recognize the symptoms of radiation exposure and/or treat the victims of a radiological incident/event, including a severe
transportation accident, a nuclear power plant accident, or the detonation of a radiological dispersal device or
an improvised nuclear device. Such personnel may include:
- Emergency Health Care Professionals (Physicians, Physician Assistants, EMTs/Paramedics, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, etc.)
- County Health Department Emergency Preparedness Coordinators, and Medical and Nursing Staff
- Epidemiology/Syndromic Surveillance Personnel
Course Objectives and Continuing Medical Education (CME) Approval
At the end of this course,,
the participant will be able to:
- Discuss the concepts of radiation physics and radiobiology that are important in the emergency care of the radiation
accident victim.
- Define: exposure, contamination, internal contamination and radionuclide incorporation.
- Select and prepare an appropriate treatment/decontamination area within the hospital/healthcare facility, and
determine staff and patient needs.
- Describe radiation protection and contamination control techniques that can be utilized during the emergency care
of contaminated radiation accident victims.
- Given the identity of an internally deposited radioactive contaminant, select the appropriate pharmacological
intervention.
- Name sources of assistance that are available during real or presumed radiation accidents.
- Describe radiological and nuclear incidents of concern and the medical consequences.
- Discuss the roles and responsibilities of physicians and nurses during a radiation accident affecting a large
population.
- Recognize the signs and symptoms of Acute Radiation Syndrome and utilize syndromic surveillance to
epidemiologically-link cases to track a radiation source
ORISE (Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education), is accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ORISE takes responsibility
for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this ACCME activity , which has been assigned 9 hours of American Medical Association Physician's
Recognition Award (AMA PRA) Category 1 Credits for full participation. Physicians should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their
participation in this activity. This course has also been approved by: the Florida Board of Nursing for 12 hours of continuing
education for Florida nurses; by the Florida Bureau of Radiation Control for 12 hours of continuing education for Florida radiologic technologists;
and by the Department of Health for 9 hours of continuing education for Florida Environmental Health professionals. Florida EMTs and
Paramedics may also submit the course for continuing education credit through their alternative pathway.
