Community Water Fluoridation

Fluoridation Surveillance System

All fluoridating community water systems are monitored on a monthly basis to ensure the quality of fluoridation and that optimal fluoride levels are maintained. Approximately 90% of the systems consistently maintain optimal fluoride levels. On a quarterly basis, each water system is sent an individual feedback report detailing the status of their system. Systems not meeting optimal levels are followed up to determine their problem and offered assistance, if needed.

Criteria for monitoring water systems are as follows:

  1. Water samples are tested 75% or more days of the month (at least 23 of 30).
  2. The monthly fluoride level is between .7 and 1.2 mg/l (ppm).
  3. 80% (24 of 30) or more days of the month the fluoride residual is between .6 and 1.3 mg/l (ppm).
  4. Split sample analysis results are received from both the fluoridating system and a certified lab.
  5. The fluoridating system's split sample analysis results does not deviate more than +.2 mg/l (ppm) from the certified laboratory analysis results.
