Description, Schedule and Presenter Information

Healthy teeth can last a lifetime!

Tooth decay and loss from oral diseases that lead to costly dental work and dentures, was once accepted as a natural part of aging. Today more adults than ever are keeping their teeth well into their advanced years, presenting challenges for long-term and community caregivers.

In spite of improvements in oral health, the elderly who are disadvantaged suffer severe tooth destruction and loss from dental caries and periodontitis - the result of a lifetime with little or no access to dental care. Many face the need for expensive restorative care or tooth extractions and denture, which are unaffordable.

Oral health is essential for total health!

The impact of poor oral health on self esteem, social interaction, and nutrition has long been recognized. Researchers are now clarifying systemic connections between oral health and chronic diseases and conditions.

Join us in efforts to improve oral health for the elderly as this forum brings together specialists in the fields of social work, gerontology, medicine, dentistry, public health and long term care to discuss aging issues and the importance of oral health for the elderly. Models and the strategies for reaching the elderly in their communities and long term care facilities will be presented and discussed. Each day will close with the creation of workgroups to develop an action plan proposal with specific steps to improve oral health for the elderly and enhance activities of the State Oral Health Improvement Plan for Disadvantaged Floridians.
