Epilepsy Provider and Education
The Provider and Education Program provides
up-to-date information about epilepsy and how to prevent it. The program goals are to:
- Prevent the occurrence of new cases of epilepsy whenever possible. Sometimes events that may lead to epilepsy can be
avoided or prevented by simple precautions, such as wearing headgear when cycling or
skating.
- Prevent recurring seizures once epilepsy has been diagnosed. Prompt diagnosis, correct use of medication, and changes in lifestyle
can help control seizures.
- Prevent social and personal problems that may be caused by having epilepsy.
Provider and education activities reach people in the community who have epilepsy and
those who may come in contact with people who have epilepsy. By learning more about
epilepsy professionals are better prepared to work with people who have epilepsy and have
a more positive attitude about epilepsy.
Epilepsy Provider and Education presentations and awareness activities teach people
to:
- Recognize a seizure or unusual behavior that might be a seizure, such as staring spells
or wandering.
- Prevent epilepsy by avoiding head injuries through the use of bicycle helmets, seat
belts and infant car seats.
- Provide proper first aid for the different kinds of seizures. This training prevents
injuries or problems that may occur if seizures are handled incorrectly.
- Take medications correctly and understand why this is so important in controlling
seizures.
- Understand the effects of medication in the workplace and the classroom, such as memory
difficulties and drowsiness.
- Recognize myths and misunderstandings about epilepsy and teach others the facts.
- Eliminate unreasonable fears about seizures and epilepsy and help people with epilepsy
take part in activities or sports when appropriate.

Resource Library
Each Epilepsy Services Program office maintains a resource library with books,
pamphlets and videos that cover many topics about seizures and living with epilepsy. Some
pamphlets and videos are available in Spanish and Creole.
How Do I Learn More?
Anyone can request an educational program for a school, workplace or community group.
There is no fee for these educational programs. Activities for professional groups are
also available at no charge or for a minimal fee. You can also call the Epilepsy Services
Program provider in you area to learn more about epilepsy or epilepsy Provider
for yourself, a family member, or someone you know.
