Public Health Social Work Public Health Social Work at the Florida Department of Health What's New Training Florida Schools of Social Work Web Resources March is National Social Work month. Research has demonstrated that emotional health affects the course of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. Individuals with depression use more medical services, are more likely to use tobacco and other drugs and have poorer health outcomes. Social workers have the ability to view a person through a holistic lens. More than just treating the physical effects of an illness, social workers are aware of the other psychosocial issues that play into a person?s treatment and recovery. As the Department of Health looks to the future and how it will address such public health challenges as obesity, chronic illness, use of tobacco and other drugs, and suicide it will be even more critical to employ qualified staff who have the education, training and skills to develop and implement appropriate prevention and intervention strategies. Social workers are essential to the hope and health of Florida's citizens. Thanks for all the wonderful work that you do. *You may need to download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the document).
