April Is National Minority Health Month
The Florida Department of Health (DOH) joins minority health advocates statewide to recognize April as National Minority Health Month.
This year’s theme, Health Equity Can’t Wait. Act Now in Your CommUNITY!, is a call to action and unity for the regions, the state and local offices of minority health, county health departments, and organizations and partners involved and invested in reducing health disparities.
National Minority Health Month has been recognized by the U.S. Congress as an important effort aimed at raising awareness of health disparities that exists in minority populations.
The Office of Minority Health has planned a month long series of activities that will focus on obesity prevention, youth violence prevention, organ donation promotion, and oral health.
April 2012 marks the first anniversary of the launch of the Health and Human Services (HHS) Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities and the National Stakeholder Strategy for Achieving Health Equity. The HHS action plan outlines goals and actions HHS will take to reduce health disparities among racial and ethnic minorities. Based on these activities, the Department of Health (DOH) will promote integrated approaches, evidence-based programs and best practices to reduce these disparities.
