April Is National Minority Health Month

The Florida Department of Health (DOH) joins minority health advocates statewide to recognize April as National Minority Health Month.

This year’s theme, "Advance Health Equity Now: Uniting Our Communities to Improve Health Outcomes," is a call to action and unity for the state and local offices of minority health, county health departments, and organizations and partners involved and invested in reducing health disparities. We are a state of communities and we depend on each other. By recommitting ourselves to eliminating the serious and substantial health disparities faced by racial and ethnic minorities, we are investing in our entire state’s physical and economic well-being.

In an effort to reduce health disparities and improve the health status of minority populations, the 107th Congress, in H. Con. Res. 388 agreed on October 3, 2002 to establish a National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month. National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month is an important effort aimed at raising awareness of health disparities that exists in minority populations.

The Florida Office of Minority Health (OMH), in conjunction with other Department of Health’s Divisions, programs, and County Health Departments, has planned a month-long series of activities that will focus on the advancement of health equity.
