2013 Hispanic-Latino Heritage Month Celebration

The Florida Department of Health, Office of Minority Health, Hispanic-Latino Planning Committee, Orange County Health Department and the Duval County Health Department are joining forces this year to provide a wealth of knowledge, arts and foods to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Hispanic-Latinos throughout Florida.

This year’s theme, "Hispanics: Serving and Leading Our Nation with Pride and Honor" recognizes the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrates the group's heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.

HISPANIC-LATINO HERITAGE MONTH is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th annually; The Office of Minority Health and the Hispanic-Latino planning committee have planned a series of events to celebrate the heritage, culture, spirit, health issues and extraordinary contributions of Hispanic-Latinos Americans.

In September 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson was authorized by Congress to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week.  In 1988, the observance was expanded to a month long celebration beginning on September 15th.  This is the anniversary celebration of the independence of five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census population estimates, there are roughly 50.5 million Hispanics living in the United States, representing approximately 16.3% of the U.S. total population, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or race minority.

The 2010 U.S. Census population estimates there are 4, 223,806 Hispanic-Latinos living in Florida, representing approximately 22.5 % of Florida’s total population. The leading causes of death in the Hispanic-Latino population are heart disease, cancer, and accidents (unintentional injuries).
