HIspanic-Latino Heritage Month
September 15 - October 15, 2012
The Florida Department of Health, Office of Minority Health and the Florida Hispanic Professional Associates, Inc. are joining forces again to provide a wealth of knowledge, arts and foods to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Hispanic-Latinos throughout Florida.
This year’s theme, “Achieving Health Equity for Hispanic-Latinos-Keeping the Promise: Unity, Strength, Leadership”is a tribute to the visionaries of this powerful group citizens that has resulted in transformative programs that develop and empower young Hispanic-Latinos into the next generation of Hispanic-Latino leaders.
Hispanic Latino Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th annually; The Office of Minority Health and the Hispanic Health Advisory Council have planned a series of events to celebrate the heritage, culture, spirit, and extraordinary contributions of Hispanic-Latinos Americans.
In September 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson was authorized by Congress to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988, the observance was expanded to a month long celebration beginning on September 15th. This is the anniversary celebration of the independence of five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively. |

According to the 2010 U.S. Census population estimates, there are roughly 50.5 million Hispanics living in the United States, representing approximately 16.3% of the U.S. total population, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or race minority.
The 2010 U.S. Census population estimates there are 4, 223,806 Hispanic-Latinos living in Florida, representing approximately 22.5 % of Florida’s total population. The leading causes of death in the Hispanic-Latino population are heart disease, cancer, and accidents (unintentional injuries).
