Hispanic Latino Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15, 2012

HIspanic-Latino Heritage Month

September 15 - October 15, 2012

The Florida Department of Health, Office of Minority Health and the Florida Hispanic Professional Associates, Inc. are joining forces again to provide a wealth of knowledge, arts and foods to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Hispanic-Latinos throughout Florida.

This year’s theme, “Achieving Health Equity for Hispanic-Latinos-Keeping the Promise: Unity, Strength, Leadership”is a tribute to the visionaries of this powerful group citizens that has resulted in transformative programs that develop and empower young Hispanic-Latinos into the next generation of Hispanic-Latino leaders.

Hispanic Latino Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th through October 15th annually; The Office of Minority Health and the Hispanic Health Advisory Council have planned a series of events to celebrate the heritage, culture, spirit, and extraordinary contributions of Hispanic-Latinos Americans.

In September 1968, Lyndon B. Johnson was authorized by Congress to proclaim National Hispanic Heritage Week.  In 1988, the observance was expanded to a month long celebration beginning on September 15th.  This is the anniversary celebration of the independence of five Latin American countries - Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.  In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.
