Strategic Issue # 1:  How can we protect children in Mango County from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke?

Goal: By 2015 all children in Mango County will be free from exposure to environmental tobacco smoke

Essential Service #s 5 - Develop policies and plans that support individual and community health efforts.

Essential Service # 6- Enforce laws and regulations that protect health and ensure safety.

1. By 2010 middle and high school students will report lower than state levels of exposure to environmental tobacco smoke  on the Florida Department of Health Youth Tobacco Survey and the Florida Department of Children and Families Substance Abuse Survey

   

2. By 2010 births to mothers who smoke in Mango County will be at or below the state rate.

3. By 2010 tobacco use will be eliminated from the outdoor entrance ways of all Mango County government   buildings.

 

4. By 2010 tobacco use will be restricted to designated smoking areas only at all Mango County Parks and Recreation facilities and Mango County District School events.

1.  All providers will participate on a

     taskforce “Preventing ETS Exposure

     Among Birth to 5 year olds in Mango

     County”

 

 

1. Form a task force or collaborate with the

     Birth to Five Task Force to identify

     activities that would contribute to the

     above stated objectives with specific

      focus on prenatal and 0-5 year olds

  

 

2. Task force will create its own action plan

    to include monitoring and referral of

    pregnant smoking clients to cessation

    programs.

 

3. A public information campaign including

    News media and marketing including bill

    Board messages will inform adults about

    the benefits of protecting children

    from ETS.

2. By 2010 the Mango County Parks and

    Recreation Division will have policies in

    place that include established designated

    smoking areas in all parks and playgrounds

    and at all community events.

 

 

 

 

1. Signs will be erected in the county parks

     to designate “Smoking Only Areas”

 

2.  The Mango County Parks and

     Recreation Division will adopt a formal

     resolution to Proclaiming a goal of

     protecting children from ETS.

3. Keep Mango County Beautiful “Pick

    Your  Butts off the Beach Program” and

    Children’s Coastal Clean Up Day

     tobacco cleanup contest will save and

     publicize their final clean up results

3.  By  2010 the Mango County Commission

      Will have established written tobacco use

      Policies  for all employees including a no

      Smoking policy at the outdoor entrances

      of all County buildings.

 

 

 

 

 

1. A committee comprised community

    partners including the CHD, Sheriff,

    School District, Parks and Recreation,

    Library staff and Day Care Centers will

    develop a sub action plan to reach this

     objective.

    New non smoking area signs will be

    erected with emphasis on children’s

    health.

4.  By 2010 the Mango County School

      District will be in full compliance with all

      Florida tobacco use statutes related to

      School property and school sponsored

      events.

              

1. Messages will be printed on all event

   program brochures informing adults about

   Mango County’s goal of protecting its

  children free from ETS and kindly

   informing them that they are at a tobacco

   free school sponsored event.

 

2. Messages will be printed on school field

    trip permission forms reminding parents

    about protecting children from exposure

    to tobacco products.
