Formulating Goals and
Strategies Exercise
Directions
During the Formulate
Goals and Strategies phase of the MAPP process, participants take the
strategic issues identified in the previous phase and formulate goal
statements related to those issues. The next task is to identify broad
strategies for achieving the stated goals related to the communitys
vision. The vision presents, in the broadest sense , what the public
health system wants to achieve.
Goals are broad long
term aims that define the desired result that will be achieved when the
strategic issue is resolved.
Directions
You will now
brainstorm a goal for each of the strategic issues you and your partners
have identified. This is the beginning of the development of an action
plan.
Use the Strategy
Development Matrix worksheets to record the goal for each strategic
issue. You can also record any barriers or comments about possible
implementation techniques on this matrix.
The questions below can serve to guide you as you formulate
goals.
1. Based on your review of the strategic
issue and an overall vision of improved health status or quality of life
related to the issue, what would you say is the apparent or obvious goal?
2. What broad
alternatives might members of the health system pursue?
3. What are the
barriers to realizing these alternatives?
