Facilities Overview

The program provides acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation care, transitional living services, adaptive modifications and devices, prevention, education, basic research, and long-term community supports. Medical rehabilitative services are provided in state-designated facilities which meet standards established in this plan. Although Florida has a nationally prominent and unique system of care, the need still exists to develop and expand community-based programs and to promote community reintegration. This will encourage the continuum of care directed toward the outcome of independence.

State Designated Facility

For a facility to become a Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program facility, it must comply with standards and criteria established in this state plan. Designated facilities are required to maintain the highest level of expertise and experience to address the medical, rehabilitation, and physiological needs of individuals who sustain traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. The regional facilities are strategically located throughout the state to ensure accessibility and volume of new admissions. A minimum number of new admissions is required to maintain the expertise of professional staff and level of comprehensive program required. The need for facilities is based on several factors including:

   1. Geographical location
   2. Incidence of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries in a region
   3. Preponderance of need in a specific region

Becoming a State Facility

To become a BSCIP designated facility, the organization must apply through the formal application process. Facilities requesting designation are sent an application package including the applicable standards and criteria. The facility must submit the completed application including a list of new admissions. The application will be reviewed by the BSCIP staff or peer review committee to ensure compliance with the core standards and criteria established in the BSCIP state plan. If the facility meets the core standards and additional facilities are required in that geographical region, the BSCIP will proceed with the site review process. The BSCIP is responsible for coordinating and conducting the site reviews. The team consists of professionals with specific knowledge and experience needed to ensure compliance with the standards. Facilities who meet core standards are awarded a one or three year BSCIP designation. 

All designated facilities are encouraged to promote their designation as a state designated brain and spinal cord injury center. For additional information or request an application, please write or call the state BSCIP office listed below.
