We're Champs at fighting heart attacks. HeartHealthChamps.org MEDIA TIPS TO HELP KNOCK OUT HEART DISEASE During February, American Heart Month. Unfortunately, every year since 1900 (except for 1918, when the influenza pandemic killed more people than World War I), cardiovascular disease has caused more deaths in the U.S. than any other cause. However, over the past 40 years, there has been a striking reduction in coronary heart disease deaths in men, but reductions in women have lagged behind. More women than men die of coronary heart disease every year, which has been the case for the last 25 years. In fact, cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women regardless of race or ethnicity. At every age, more women in the U.S. die from cardiovascular disease than from cancer – that’s ANY type of cancer, including breast cancer.
