(Daytona Beach, FL) - The Daytona Beach Fire Department in partnership with Halifax Health and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center will host two Town Hall meetings with the purpose of bringing awareness to the signs and symptoms of Cerebrovascular Disease, also known as a Stroke.

The first town hall meeting will be held at the Dickerson Center located at 308 S. Martin Luther King Blvd on May 17th at 6pm. The second town hall meeting will be at the Schnebly Center located at 1101 N. Atlantic Ave on May 25th at 6pm. Free food will be provided by Florida Hospital on May 17th and Halifax Health on May 24th.

The American Heart Association 2011 statistics report that a stroke happens to someone every 45 seconds across America. Strokes are the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States and the #1 leading cause of long term disability. In Volusia County some hospitals are seeing upwards of 70% of people who are having a stroke within our community; arrive at the hospital more than 24 hours after the first onset. Research also suggests that most people are driving themselves to the hospital, which puts them in greater risk and danger.

The Daytona Beach Fire Department, in partnership with Halifax Health and Florida Hospital Memorial would like to see our community more aware of the risk factors of a stroke and how to prevent it. To find out more information on how to prevent a stroke or if you would like to have someone come speak to your organization or association about the signs and symptoms of a stroke, please contact the Daytona Beach Fire Department at 386-671-4000.
