VOLUSIA COUNTY – To all of the men out there, if you don’t know what your prostate is or what it does, you’re certainly not alone: most men don’t. But you really should. More than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life. That’s why Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach have decided to recognize Men’s Health Week, celebrated nationally June 13-19, with a free screening and informative seminar.
During the week of June 13 to 17, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial will provide complimentary PSA blood work for men between the ages of 40 to 64. In addition, Dr. Gary Graham, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial radiation oncologist, will be available to answer questions. Appointments are required and can be scheduled by calling toll-free (866) 328-6417.
On Thursday, June 16, at noon, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center presents a Men’s Health Education seminar. Hezi Cohen, MD, family medicine physician and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center Chief of Medicine, will discuss various men’s health problems and steps that can be taken to prevent disease. A heart-healthy lunch is provided. Admission is free, but seating is limited. To RSVP, call toll-free (866) 328-6417.
The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.
Prostate cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men. Each year, more than 230,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and about 30,000 will die of it. The good news is that it has one of the best survival rates – 91 percent – if detected and treated early.
