ORANGE CITY, FL—November 4, 2010 - Barbara Prisco, RN, OCN, MA, has joined the Cancer Institute at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial and will serve as the Institute’s Cancer Center Navigator. In this role, she will help guide patients and families through the complexities of cancer treatment, acting as both an advocate and a health care advisor.
Prior to joining Fish Memorial, Prisco had designed, developed and coordinated a navigation program for a cancer center in Brevard County. As a member of the National Coalition of Oncology Nurse Navigators and with almost 50 years of nursing experience, she has a true passion for patient advocacy and navigation. “I’ve tried retiring three different times but I just love my job and can’t imagine not doing it,” said Prisco. “As a Navigator, I’m here to make the process more supportive for patients, caregivers and family members. I offer one-on-one contact and serve as a clinical and emotional resource throughout screening, diagnosis, treatment and recovery. These patients face long and difficult treatment regimens, and while I cannot always change the outcome of the disease, I know I can at least help to make it more bearable.”
With the recent implementation of the Navigation program, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial Cancer Institute now offers a streamlined process that allows patients to receive expert treatment and support close to home. For more information, or to schedule an appointment with Barbara, please call (386) 917 – 5851.
