Vision and Mission

The vision of the Influenza and Pneumococcal Program is to enhance the quality of life for all Floridians through the effective and efficient use of immunizations to eliminate vaccine-reventable diseases.

Our mission is to promote and protect the health of all children and adults in Florida through the reduction and eventual elimination vaccine-preventable disease through immunization.

About Our Program

The Influenza and Pneumococcal Program at the Volusia County Health Department provides influenza (flu) and pneumococcal (pneumonia) vaccinations countywide to help reduce the spread of these vaccine-preventable diseases in our community. Program staff works cooperatively with local vaccine suppliers, fire and law enforcement representatives, and health care professionals to reach as many residents as possible during flu season.

Our Services

During flu season, the Influenza and Pneumococcal Program vaccinates residents all over Volusia County for influenza and pneumococcal disease in a number of ways, including:

  • Traveling to local businesses, churches, assisted living facilities, and other community agencies to vaccinate employees, members or any other interested parties.

  • Setting up flu shots clinics at all health department sites for distributing vaccine.

  • Setting up at special events to help distribute vaccine to the general public, i.e. health fairs.

Outside of flu season, staff maintains the Florida SHOTS database, a state database that is used to share electronic data between healthcare providers to increase and maintain immunization levels. In addition, educational presentations are provided to community organizations on seasonal and pandemic influenza.

Program Accomplishments

  • Promoted and held the first “drive-thru” flu shot clinic in Florida, which was a huge success and is being used as a model for other county health departments.
  • Consistently in the “Top 5” for the state of Florida in providing the most pneumococcal vaccinations.
