DAYTONA BEACH – This year marks the 12th year of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD), which is recognized on February 7th. NBHAAD is a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative designed to encourage Blacks across the United States and Territorial Areas to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved with HIV/AIDS, as it continues to impact Black communities.

It is estimated that more than 1400 people are living with HIV/AIDS in Volusia/Flagler Counties. In Volusia County, Blacks made up 9 percent of the population, but were 37 percent of the AIDS cases and 30 percent of the HIV cases in 2009. Below are the statistics of people living with HIV/AIDS in Florida:

  • One in 50 blacks
  • One in 178 Hispanics
  • One in 347 Whites
