DELTONA- The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children or WIC has a new home on the west side of Volusia County. After a number of years of being located on Saxon Boulevard in Deltona, that location has closed and relocated to the main Deltona health department site at 3151 Howland Blvd in the Jena Medical Plaza.

“This move gives our clients a one stop approach to accessing the Volusia County Health Department’s programs and services that include the WIC Program, child and adult immunizations, family planning, communicable disease control and the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program,” said Dr. Bonnie J. Sorensen, director of the Volusia County Health Department. “We are excited about the opportunity to serve our clients under one roof.” .

WIC is a federally funded program designed to provide food to low-income pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children until the age of five. The program provides a combination of nutrition education, supplemental foods, breastfeeding promotion and support, and referrals for health care. The WIC Program has proven effective in preventing and improving nutrition related health problems within its population.

The United States Department of Agriculture funds the WIC Program. Each state administers the program for its residents. Last year, the local WIC Program served about 127,000 clients. The program provided nearly 440,000 vouchers for participants to buy health and nutritious foods which generated $7.2 million into the local economy.
