“SAFETY IS NO ACCIDENT: LIVE INJURY FREE”

DAYTONA BEACH – The Volusia County Health Department (VCHD) supports National Public Health Week (April 4-April 10) by encouraging Volusia County residents to practice safety measures to avoid accidents. This year’s theme is “Safety is no accident: Live injury free.”

Injury is the most expensive medical problem in the United States. In a single year, $80 billion will be spent on medical care: another $326 billion on the lost productivity; and an untold amount on social support for the individuals and families caring for the severely injured. In many cases, these costs are increasing because preventative measures are not being taken to prevent injuries and violence.

“Our residents can make a real difference in our community by committing to safe behaviors for themselves, their children and families,” said Dr. Bonnie J. Sorensen, director of the Volusia County Health Department. “Taking simple steps within our families and our communities will help prevent injuries and therefore create safer places to live.”

During National Public Health Week, the Volusia County Health Department is hosting its annual Employee Recognition Program on Wednesday, April 6. The health department will officially launch its new public health logo (see logo below) adopted from the National Association of City and County Health Officers. During the month of April, “What is Public Health?” brochures will be available at all health department locations in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, DeLand, and Deltona.

The American Public Health Association hopes to educate Americans about safety by focusing on the following daily topics throughout the week:

Monday – Injury Prevention Starts… At Home

Tuesday – Injury Prevention Starts… At Work

Wednesday – Injury Prevention Starts… At Play

Thursday – Injury Prevention Starts… On the Move

Friday – Injury Prevention Starts… In Your Community

Public health efforts range from containing deadly, contagious diseases to pushing for healthier lifestyles, from preventing diseases to addressing catastrophic events, and from providing basic sanitation to ensuring safe food and water.
