About Our Program

The Sexually Transmitted Disease Program at the Volusia County Health Department provides intervention and prevention services countywide to help reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases in our community. Program staff works cooperatively with local providers, community service agencies, and area colleges to reach as many at risk people as possible.

Our Services

We inform, educate and if needed bring treatment to residents all over Volusia County who have tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease:

  • Traveling to local shelters, community programs, schools, and community agencies to provide transmission information and screenings for any interested parties.

  • Providing prevention education throughout the County.

  • Setting up at special events to help distribute information to the general public.

Our staff works with the Florida PRISM database, a state database that is used to increase and maintain prompt effective treatment levels. In addition, age appropriate educational presentations are provided to community organizations.

Program Accomplishments

  • The Sexually Transmitted Disease program handles over 2,500 reportable sexually transmitted diseases per year in Volusia County.

  • Promoted and developed a cooperative program to prevent neonatal transmission of sexually transmitted disease including HIV.

  • All Volusia County Health Department sexually transmitted disease intervention specialists have attained advanced disease intervention certification through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
