Become a volunteer:
Minority AIDS Program
If you are interested in becoming an official Alachua County Health Department volunteer please complete the following process
"Under Florida law, e-mail addresses are public records. If you do not want your e-mail address released in response to a public records request, do not send electronic mail to this entity. Instead, contact this office by phone or in writing."
If you are interested in volunteering with the Minority AIDS Program you must email Mrs. Teresa White, program assistant at: 313HIV@doh.state.fl.us to schedule a face to face interview or call 352-334-7972. You will be required to bring the 4 volunteer documents to your interview. After your interview, you will be asked to turn in your Health Dept application to Linda Kenworthy in personnel with 40.50 cash or check to complete a police background check. Call her at 352-334-7971 before you show up
If the background check is clear, you will need to call Linda Kenworthy at 352-334-7971 to attend the next Security Training and HIPPA training. The training will include HIPAA/Info Security, Safety Awareness, Code of Ethics, (short break time), and Computer Basics. Security Training is held every other Tuesday from 9am till 11:30am in the IT lab. YOU MUST ATTEND!
Volunteers MUST attend this session, if you miss 2 scheduled orientation meetings, you will NOT be considered to work as a volunteer, background check fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.
Upon completion of both steps, remember to tell the personnel office to issue you a badge. This badge will be for the purposes of official Health Dept Business and abuse or misrepresentation will not be tolerated. If you lose your badge you must report it immediately to Teresa White. Your badge will not give you access into the building at any time after hours. YOU MUST TURN IN YOUR BADGE IF YOU LEAVE THE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM OR TERMINATED for any reason.
You will be required to turn in monthly timesheets by the 5th of every month – volunteers should have a minimum of 15 hours a month to be considered active in the volunteer program.
The Minority AIDS Coordinator has the authority to revoke and suspend participation in the volunteer program at any time. Remember! We are dealing with sensitive information and your intentions must be sincere and honest.
If you are interested in volunteering but cannot commit to the responsibilities of the Health Department volunteer program, you can volunteer with any community agencies or University of Florida HIV/AIDS groups. See the Minority Volunteer program projects sheet for contacts. You will be allowed to attend and participate in community events but under the representation of the community or UF group not the Health Department.
You are expected to take initiative as a volunteer. Volunteers in the Minority AIDS Program are not allowed to promote projects that are not approved by the Minority AIDS Coordinator. Department of Health staff and volunteers are NOT ALLOWED TO SOLICIT for the Health Department. We can coordinate fundraisers and collection drives for community agencies. There will be no soliciting using Department of Health letterhead.
If you are interested in offering HIV testing in the community during events, you must complete a 3 or 2 day training that is offered at the Health Department. To register for the class call Roger Dolz at 352-334-7963 and let him know you are working with Teresa White. You must attend all 3 days to receive certificate of completion.
If you are interested in working in the STD clinic, let Teresa White know and we will schedule an interview with the clinic supervisor. You must be available to assist on Tuesdays and Thursday from 12-4:30 pm. You must possess a DOH badge and be 501 trained as an HIV counselor. You must present your 501 certificate and your most recent 501 update certificate.
Thanks so much for your desire to assist in the prevention of HIV/AIDS.
