Changes to health department services are coming soon
The Loveland Boulevard location in Port Charlotte will continue to be home to Vital Statistics (birth and death records), Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Public Health Preparedness, Disease Control Prevention, Family Planning, School Health, Health Promotion, and Administration.
Environmental Health services will remain at the county building on Murdock Circle. WIC services will continue to be offered in Port Charlotte and in Englewood on San Casa Blvd.
April 25, 2013: Within the next couple of months, The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County will no longer offer pediatric and adult primary care and dental services. Patients will need to find a new doctor and dentist. Patients are encouraged to contact another clinic and enroll with a new doctor at their earliest convenience.
The Port Charlotte clinic on Loveland Blvd, is no longer accepting new adult primary care patients unless they have been assigned by their insurance to this health department. A new patient is one whose last date of primary care service was more than 3 years ago. In other words, to receive adult primary care services, a person must have received primary care services within the last 3 years or be assigned to us by their insurance.
Read about the Englewood Clinic.
Patients are free to choose an alternate provider for their primary care. If they have insurance, including Medicaid, they should call their insurance agent for a list of providers. Most pediatricians in Charlotte County accept Medicaid. The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County does not endorse any agency. Family Health Centers of SW Florida (FHC) is looking for an Englewood location where they will open a clinic. Once FHC's new clinic is open, the health department's Englewood clinic on San Casa will close. Learn about Family Health Centers. The San Casa clinic is accepting new patients but they must live in Englewood and be in Charlotte County and live in one of the following zip codes:
- 34223 (Englewood - Charlotte County)
- 34224 (Englewood - Charlotte County
- 33946 (Placida)
- 33947 (Rotonda West)
- 33981 (Gulf Cove - Charlotte County)
Many factors, but simply put, the Health Department is refocusing on population health. The Health Department is receiving reduced financial support. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC), such as Family Health Centers and North Port Health Center, are able to provide medical and dental services, along with avoiding duplication of primary care services in Charlotte County. While FQHC’s provide quality, affordable healthcare to people on Medicaid, uninsured or insured, health departments are able to focus on population health and core public health functions.

Public Health touches every aspect of our daily lives.
By definition, public health aims to provide the maximum benefit for the largest number of people. It is what we do collectively to assure conditions in which people can be healthy. Public Health is a well-established science that has been in practice for hundreds of years. It is based upon the social, behavioral, environmental, and socioeconomic factors that impact population-wide health.
The overarching goal of public health is to protect and improve the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Through research, surveillance, and data analysis, we develop programs and policies that protect the health of the entire community. |
