Good News!
Many people have been able to prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes by taking action during the prediabetes stage (when blood glucose levels are higher than normal, but do not necessitate a diabetes diagnosis). Lifestyle changes which include modest physical activity (30 minutes per day) and a reasonable amount of weight loss (5-10 percent), can have a significant effect on your future health.
If you are overweight and over age 45, you should be checked for prediabetes (especially if you have other risk factors for diabetes, such as a family history of diabetes, high blood pressure, a history of gestational diabetes or giving birth to a baby weighing more than 9 pounds, low HDL cholesterol and high triglycerides, or belonging to an ethnic or minority group at high risk for diabetes).
