Environmental Health

The DeSoto County Health Department--Environmental Health Division is designed to ensure the safety and sanitation of our environment by enforcement of public health laws.  Typical activities include inspections, complaint investigations, plan reviewing, permits and regulatory enforcement.  The following index lists standard Environmental Health programs and services established to protect the residents of DeSoto County:

Applications / Electronic Forms

Biomedical Waste

Environmental Health is responsible for assuring proper identification, segregation, containment, storage and labeling of biomedical waste in DeSoto County to protect healthcare workers, environmental staff, waste haulers and the general public from risks associated with potentially infectious biomedical waste.

Food Hygiene Services

The Florida Department of Health regulates the institutional food operations in schools, group care facilities, hospitals, jails, fraternal organizations and lounges.  These establishments are inspected four times each year for equipment and sanitation practices; specialists investigate reports of food-borne illness outbreaks.

Foster Homes

Based on requests from the Department of Children and Families, Environmental Specialists conduct safety and sanitation inspections on private homes where children, the elderly, or mentally handicapped persons may be placed.

Migrant Farm Worker Housing

An application for a permit to construct or operate Migrant Farm Worker Housing is required by Florida State Law.  Environmental Health is responsible for plan reviewing, permitting and conducting inspections and investigations to ensure that migrant housing is in compliance with State laws and regulations. 

Mobile Home Parks / Recreational Vehicle Parks

Environmental Health issues annual operating permits to Mobile Home/RV Parks, campgrounds, and recreational facilities.  The site, water supply, sewage/garbage disposal, sanitary facilities, maintenance, and pest control are inspected twice a year.

Petroleum Storage Tanks / S.U.P.E.R. Act

The Petroleum Storage Tank Compliance Program was established to protect Florida's groundwater from harmful contaminates due to faulty petroleum storage tank systems.  Installation, compliance and closure inspections, along with incident investigations are required activities enforced by the State to keep Florida's groundwater water pure and safe.

Public Swimming Pools and Bathing Places

Public swimming pools and spas are permitted and inspected by Environmental Specialists to ensure compliance with state standards.

Sanitary Nuisances

Environmental Health investigates nuisance complaints from the public which involve septic problems such as sewage on the ground or other concerns about unsanitary conditions.  To submit a complaint, or to report disease call (863) 993-4601.

Septic Systems

Environmental Health issues permits for new systems and for existing septic system repairs and replacements.  We also evaluate existing systems for compliance with all local and state laws and ordinances, as needed.

Small Public Supply Wells /   Residential Well Water Testing

We monitor wells owned by businesses or wells that serve rental units to ensure that quality and construction standards are met.  Our Specialists sample public and private water systems for contamination by bacteria, lead and nitrates.  Water testing is also available to the public.
