Super Act
State Underground Petroleum Environmental Response Act (Super Act)
Inspector Sylvia Henderson
In
response to ground water contamination resulting from leaking
underground petroleum storage tanks the Department of Health was given
public health responsibility in identifying drinking water wells around
contaminated petroleum facilities. Recognizing the number of
contaminated facilities and the threat to drinking water, a
representative number of drinking water wells are sampled for petroleum
contamination.
Under Chapter 376.3071, F.S., the
SUPER Act Program
is responsible for identifying areas in the state having drinking water
contamination because of leaking underground storage tanks, surface
spills and other discharges to the environment. This program conducts
well surveillance in potentially impacted areas, notifies the public of
potential adverse health effects and provides assistance in obtaining
alternative sources of drinking water.
Since the program's
inception, County Health Departments (CHDs) have investigated
contaminated sites statewide and sampled drinking water systems under
the direction of the State Health Office. These services are funded by
the Legislature through the
Inland Protection Trust Fund. For more information visit: Petroleum Surveillance (SuperAct Program or
