HERNANDO COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT SCHOOL HEALTH SERVICES PROGRAM
The Health Department / Health Center and Hernando County Department of Education, Student Services jointly implement the School Health Service Plan for over 20,000 students in twenty-one schools. Registered nurses from the Health Department / Health Center oversee school clinics and the training of clinic staff in all public schools. These training's include but are not limited to; first aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), medication administration, policies, and procedures. The nurses also work closely with the school clinic staff to track school screenings such as vision, hearing, scoliosis, Body Mass Index (BMI) and compliance with required immunizations. Failed screenings are referred to local community resources. School Health Nursing is a specialized practice of nursing that advances the well being, academic success and life long achievement of students. School nurses facilitate positive responses to normal development, promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self- management, self advocacy and learning. The school health nurses provide education, guidance, and support to school staff, parents and children. This is done via education programs on pediatric illnesses such as diabetes, asthma, seizure disorders and other medical conditions. Individual counseling and staffing meetings are available. These nurses are liaisons between the school staff and parents identifying health needs and coordinating health care plans and goals for individual students. The School Health Wellness Committee consists of a multi-disciplinary team that meets at least three times a year, to provide assistance in reviewing the School Health Services Plan, and offer recommendations for improvements and direction.
