Even though we cannot predict many natural disasters, accidents and deliberate acts of fear or terror, we can all take control of our personal preparedness. Preparedness includes making plans that will help keep ourselves, our families and businesses safer. Preparedness takes action, like putting together a disaster kit for use at home or in an evacuation. Pick meeting places and make sure contact information is updated. Know what you'll do in different situations. Past events show that the people who planned ahead and had supplies weathered these events better and recovered more quickly.

Family Preparedness Plan

It is important that you and your family learn the hazards of your community and take time to prepare.

How Can You And Your Family Get Prepared?

Get a Plan! Link opens in new window.   A Family Preparedness Plan is a good idea. This is a plan for emergencies that you make as a family. The family's plan can include:

  • Emergency Contacts
  • Meeting Points
  • Disaster Supply Kit

Simple planning can help lessen the fear of the unknown.

Emergency Contacts

Use the recommended emergency contact checklist ( pages 4-7 of the The State of Florida Family Preparedness Guide, see above) to make your personal directory of phone numbers. Put this list in places that all family members can find.

Family Meeting Points

Since your family is not together 24 hours a day, your plan will include how you would find each other in a disaster. Meeting points (physical locations) should be identified for the most commonly frequented locations (I.e. work, school, neighbors). For example, if a disaster happens at school-your plan will have a location where both parents and child decide to meet.

Disaster Supply Kit

To decide what supplies your family/business will need during a disaster, refer to the recommended Disaster Supply Kit.Link opens in new window.
