DIABETES SELF- MANAGEMENT EDUCATION
Diabetes Self-Management Education
The purpose of the Diabetes Self-Management Education program is to give the information needed to better manage diabetes. Instructors are Jan Musick, RN and Sandra Dixon, RD, CDE. Education is provided through weekly classes over a several week period.
Information and literature are provided each week. Participation in class activities and testing blood glucose is strongly encouraged.
- Overview of the disease process, blood glucose monitoring, target blood glucose ranges.
- Nutrition, what food affects diabetes control, health meal planning. Signs, symptoms, and treatment of high and low blood glucose, sick day management.
- Reading labels, planning a controlled carbohydrate diet, activity and exercise and how it can work for you.
- Medications for diabetes, preventing chronic complications, foot and skin care.
- Goal setting, recommended schedule for medical care, stress, support and resources for diabetes.
